Amazin Games posted a new blog this week giving us a little more info on how things are going to work in their upcoming game New World. A portion of it talks about dealing with a particular creature known as the Spriggan. If you manage to take down this creature, the rewards in return will be handsome. But all of that will take place in a specific area known as the Arena, which as you might guess from other games that have one, is going to be a small area where you and others battle specific creatures. The rest of the blog is a short Q&A session with the developers where they answer some questions, but not exactly the burning ones people want to know.
Invasions sound a lot like the 50v50 PvP battles we learned about in our recent hands-on session with New Worlds. Instead of fighting off waves of Corruption, companies can recruit up to 50 players to fight for control of territories. These battles have a deeper impact on the game, because a loss is actually a loss: If you can't defend your turf against attacking players, you lose it completely.
New World needs to draw in players, not only to improve the game during the beta, but to give Amazon Games the inspiration to stay in the market. Amazon has another MMO in the works based on The Lord of the Rings, which would surely draw in fans of the series. However, if Amazon's first MMO fails, another MMO would almost certainly be dead on arrival. New World bears Crucible's scars. If it can't surmount them to claim a strong fan base, New World could collapse like Crucible and pass the scars on to Amazon's games to come.
This major change reinvents what New World is and the ideas it was originally built on. It can't be understated. New World was pitched as a survival MMO with massive open-world PvP. Many, if not most, of the game's most fervent players liked that aspect of the game and wanted more of it. It's likely also fair to say that this style of gameplay could make the MMO niche, driving away a larger audience. With launch on the horizon, Amazon Game Studios is likely hoping not just for a better game, but for a bigger and more dedicated audience, too.
