NBA 2K21's WNBA mode was barebones, to put it charitably, but 2K and Visual Concepts intend to flesh things out for the follow-up. The developers have detailed improvements to "The W" in NBA 2K22 that address some of the core complaints. Most notably, there's a new badge-based player progression system that lets you upgrade your MyPlayer creations to match your specialties. It still doesn't appear to be as sophisticated as the MyCareer mode from 2K21, but it should be more involving.
As Polygon noted, there are still areas where the WNBA component will be underdeveloped compared to the men’s league. There’s no mention of improved team management or options to spend your virtual currency. As with other sports titles, it can take a while for the modes to be on par. However, it is clear to the creators that they have some catching up to do 2K22 seems like an important first step.
What's more, players can participate in off-day activities that include scrimmages, team practices and contact workouts.
All three playable modes will help players improve their games and work toward badge progression, but the contact workouts will let gamers form connections with some of the league's biggest stars by challenging them to matchups or even teaming up in workouts.
When you’re not playing games, NBA 2K22 will have activities for you to continue to shape your player. These off-day activities can affect your progression stats, popularity, and in-game currency. The three off day activities available to players in The W will be:

You'll also find upgrades to the next-gen-only online mode. You can now hook up with friends before you start matchmaking, and you'll earn season experience points whenever you play against other people.

We’ll need to see how these changes all work out in NBA 2K22, but they sound like promising new additions to a mode that needs more features. While we one day want to see just as much to do on the WNBA side of the game, as there is to do on the NBA side, it’s nice to see that more content is being added. Hopefully future iterations will continue building on this.
